Hammer stalls like this can be seen in the series of Grenadier Paintings by David Morier. They can also be seen in various museums, such as the surviving example in the Swedish Army Museum. Hammer stalls serve two purposes: they keep the hammer dry during inclement weather and are also used as a safety precaution against accidental firing. Many reenacting groups require these for that purpose.
Our covers are made from genuine veg-tanned leather. We offer two sizes: 2 1/8" x 2 1/8", which fits larger muskets such as the Long, Short, and Indian Pattern "Brown Bess" muskets and the "Charleville" style musket. The smaller size measures 1 1/2" x 1 3/8", which fits rifles, Fowlers, and other firearms with rifle-sized locks.
