During the 18th century, containers made of bovine horns were used to store various items such as gunpowder. This particular container is used for storing salt or spices. They are made from authentic bovine horn. The horn features a hand-turned tapered walnut peg that fits snugly into a 5/16" hole. The peg is fastened to the container with a leather strap to prevent the loss of the peg. Both ends of the salt horn have a walnut plug, that is glued airtight to prevent any moisture from entering the container.
